Oh, good one, Michel. Tricks that give you a moment to think: wait, I *can* have it if I want, but how necessary to me *is* it?

The thing one needs to avoid is being too-frugal and then ruining it all on a big shopping splurge because you’ve been denying yourself things all this time. If you don’t feel denied, you are less inclined to splurge.

For “big” ticket items, I read of a trick recently: ask yourself if you would be happier with the item you want, or the value of the item in cash.
Ergo, were you to win a prize, would you be happier with the item or the cash?

I used to be a slumper and a shuffler (very sexy combo, you can imagine), but once I started with the yoga and my posture improved, my walking naturally improved as a result.

It’s all about the posture – something that you can’t learn (as AJ pointed out) while slumped over a game console or computer keyboard.

Once upon a time, such things were actually taught, either from mothers (or governesses) to their daughters, or in school. Now it’s not taught at all; neither is dance nor physical education. Slouching is democratic, apparently, as it doesn’t make you “better” than anyone else.

People are now spending decades in their heads and ignoring their bodies. Doesn’t it seem like people in their 30s are now in a great rush to rediscover their neglected bodies via tango lessons, yoga, rock-climbing and the like?

And yet physical presence is still rewarded because it is a marker of dominance and status, as we learned in Keith Johnstone’s Impro.

Interesting.

In a purely sexual context, I have no reservations whatsoever – and in fact, generally speaking, in front of men I’m very much at ease in my own skin.

By contrast, I’m considerably more shy about the eyes of other women – maybe because women are far more scrutinizing and critical. A guy is amazingly forgiving: he sees curves and “jiggle”, where we would see only flab.

But you are absolutely correct in your premise that we need to have healthier relationships with our own bodies.
