I gave my resignation notice at work the day before yesterday. I have jumped ship many times before, but this was the hardest move I have ever had to make. I was prepared for the emotional trauma of what was basically the ending of a near-seven year relationship for myself. What I was not prepared for was the emotional barrage I would receive from others. I made a grown man cry, people crowded my desk saying “nooo!!!” and “but why?!?!” and such things. But after their initial reactions, everyone was pretty much happy for me. I’m moving on to different pastures (in the same industry), and it’s high time for a change. Still, it is rather hard and I suspect I may cry like a baby on my last day.
The good thing out of all this is that my lunches are booked by colleagues and I always seem to come back drunk as a skunk. :) Wheeee!!
You’re staying in Montreal I hope.
If they were so moved by your departure, it’s because you probably did such a great job.
good luck on your next adventure!
So you made the decision then… Congrats! I’m sure you will be as appreciated in your new place of work!
I am staying in Montreal, in fact quite close to the old spot. It’s a big change, emotional, too. Yay, for change!
Congrats and best of luck. Good to hear you’re appreciated.
Congrats, good luck!
Félécitations et bonne chance ma belle!
Umm, I meant “félicitations”
You are a brave woman! Congrats.
You work for a living? I thought you were independently wealthy. :)
Thanks to all my felicitators! And no umlaut, you may have been barking up the wrong tree, here! Last week was a sad week, but I think this week might be a more exciting one. People have gotten over the general shock.
Thanks for dropping my way… :)
Although it sounds stressful, what a blessing to have everyone at work value you that damn much!
(Plus, it is nice to have an excuse for leaving that hurts no one’s feelings)
Hey good luck with the move. Change can be an exciting thing, especially when you precipitate it yourself.
Unfortunately, I don’t know what you do. Enlighten me!
Programmer -> Project Lead -> Project Manager now. All mainly in web. This is a bigger step into no more touching of code. Should be interesting. :)
Interesting! I know of two other female friends of mine who have gone through similar transitions. One went from programming, to lead programmer, to game director and another has gone from programmer, programming lead, tech lead, to head of an engine team.
Congratulations, U!
